Driving Over the Calumet Avenue Bridge

The asphalt looks liquid-lava

on this volcano-hot day.

My light eyes squint against

the sun’s desert-rays.

As I drive ahead, will I

drown in the molten road?

will I melt and evaporate

and become steam in the noses

of motorists that wonder

if it’s their engine smoking

or if it’s the Mercury

in front of them?
